Vanguard
Nigerian record labels are not enjoying the best of times, with artistes leaving them unceremoniously and not honouring their contracts . On the flipside, the average artiste will be enthusiastic to tell you that they have “divorced” the record label they were formerly signed to because of unfavourable contractual clauses .
In this report Showtime takes a look at artistes who have ‘Divorced ’ the record labels they were signed to, and the impact the separation has had on their music careers .
Mo’cheddah
Modupe Oreoluwa Oyeyemi a.k.a Mocheddah was the first ever Nigerian to be featured on MTV Base’s MTV Brand New series, that happened while she was still with her former record label, Knight House.
Mocheddah held big promises and served her fans hit songs like ’Koma Roll’. But the game changed when she left her label and ever since, she has been struggling to eke out relevance for herself in the industry .
Eva
Eva Alordiah is one of the fast-rising female rappers whose passion for her craft has seen her become a force to reckon with. She has not particularly been able to break into the mainstream, but her consistency has brought her thus far. Eva signed a contract with Trybe Records in May 2012, but five months later, they went their separate ways. In a statement released by Eldee’s Trybe Records:“ Trybe Records and Eva Alordiah have agreed to terminate their recording contract effective immediately”
Jesse Jagz
Many were surprised when rapper cum music producer Jesse Jagz took to his Facebook account to announce his separation from his erstwhile label, Chocolate City.
In his words:’ After my initial two year contractual agreement with Chocolate City, I do not wish to renew my contract with them and as such, have proceeded to continue my music career with my new team at Jesse Jagz Nation”.
But sources have revealed that the real reason Jagz Nations boss left the label was because of creative differences and a weak promotion of his brand. Unlike many of his mates, the crooner seemed to have made a wise choice as things look to be on the up and up for him even when he had to be.
