Wizkid is not a threat – Davido

Davido
Jayne Augoye engages rave of the moment, Davido, on fame, family and music
Davido is one artiste who sure knows how to blow his own trumpet. But, who won’t, when one has certain things going on well for oneself or when ‘the lines have fallen unto pleasant places’ as the Psalmist says. A rich father, a successful career which is barely three years old, a multi-million naira endorsement deal, sold-out concerts, a string of hits, a personal home, an enviable fleet of cars and a growing fan base – Davido boast all at the moment.
At 20, he has no doubt garnered what has taken many artistes years to achieve, that is, if God and mother-luck shines generously on them.
Ever since he drew the attention of millions of music fans to himself when he introduced himself as ‘Omo baba olowo’ in his 2011 hit song titled ‘Dami duro’, there has been no looking back for the singer, who says he is currently a part time student at Babcock University, Ilishan Remo.
“Everything is just God because I just wanted to do music, be happy and comfortable but He just turned my fortunes around and I thank Him for that,” he quips.
For some established artistes, fame and wealth can be a tad difficult to manage. But for Davido, it’s been a tough call especially since he has achieved both at a young age.
“Even though I have fame, money and other things working for me, I didn’t expect to be this big. I find it sometimes overwhelming that I am immediately recognised wherever I go and it is such a great feeling, that sometimes I feel like the president. I miss partying at the club with my friends, but at the same time I am happy because this is what I have always wanted to do,” he says.
No stranger to controversies and online scandals, Davido, admits that despite being a celebrity, he isn’t immune to general life issues.
“No doubt I have made some mistakes and I am not perfect. You know, sometimes I get overwhelmed or annoyed. I am a human being too, people have to understand that before they are quick to judge my actions,” he

The website of the National Association of Nigerian Students,www.nans.com.ng, and its Twitter account are dormant, findings by our correspondent have revealed.
A visit to the NANS official Twitter account, @TheNewNANS, on Thursday, showed that  it was last updated on July 3, two days after the ongoing industrial action embarked upon by the Academic Staff Union of Universities began.
On its Twitter page, the association, which boasts a membership strength of over 40 million Nigerian students, flaunts only 394 followers.
Besides, its website has no mention of the ongoing strike as well as efforts, if any, being made by NANS to find an amicable solution to the crisis.
The last time a piece of information was put on the portal was on September 29. Before then, a blog post on the

I’m blessed to have the kind of husband I have – Lami Philips

It is not often you come across a chic and beautiful woman who is all over town telling everyone who cares to listen how much she loves her husband. At least that’s what Lami Philips is trying to do with ‘Baby’, a track she said she dedicates to her husband. She recently completed the video in London and back at home WG ran into the suave beauty at an event where she talked about her career, her kind of music and more. Excerpts:

You look so beautiful even without any make-up
Thanks. Fact is that I just got back from rehearsals for a new video I’m shooting and I got all sweaty but had to quickly wipe my face with a towel inside the car
So what’s new?
We just released a new single called ‘Baby Mi’ and we are shooting another one and that’s why I’ve been all out.
*Lami Philips
*Lami Philips
What is it about ‘Baby Mi’ ?
Well, it was a song I wrote while I was in the studio. I was actually thinking about my husband and that’s how the inspiration came. So I just told my producer and we got few things down and that’s how we did the song.
What did your husband say when you told him the song was all about him?
Of course he blushed. He liked it. I’m just blessed to have the kind of husband I have. He’s been very supportive. He’s the voice in the background who has been urging me to go for whatever I want.
So your next single involves some kind of dance?
Yeah. The title is called ‘Romantic Boy’. It’s a kind of dance-hall song, something more fun and playful.
So it’s for the ‘Romantic Boy’ that you want to infuse some dance steps?
Yes. I just want to do something fun and playful this time around. That’s why you see that I’ve been going for dance rehearsals because we are shooting soon.
Does it mean you are rebranding because your previous albums don’t contain such?
I won’t want to call it re-branding because it’s who I’ve always been. I’ve always been the playful and fun type so it’s like putting who I am into the song. If you look at my last

We’ve been monitoring Iran —Eaglets

Nduka Ugbade
Golden Eaglets assistant coach Nduka Ugbade says the  team have been working on plans to beat Iran in their UAE 2013 FIFA  Under-17 World Cup Round of 16 clash in Al Ain City on Tuesday, after monitoring their last game.
The Eaglets, who have won the  tournament  three times, face a tough task to beat the hard tackling   Iranians  to reach the quarterfinals.
“We have been keeping tabs on all our likely opponents and I paid so much attention to the game between Iran and Austria on Friday,  which they won 1-0,” the former Super Eagles defender,  who captained Nigeria to win the maiden edition of the Under-17 World Cup in China  in 1985, said.
“The Iranians are a good side no doubt, but with all modesty, we should be able to cope well against them.”
The Tunisia’94 Africa Cup of Nations winner said the  Eaglets were  determined to win the tournament for the fourth-time, saying the players would give their best against Iran.
Ugbade hailed the team’s attacking game, which has yielded 14 goals in the competition so far, saying the Eaglets would not rest on their laurels.
“Of course, we are getting better since we defeated Mexico (6-1)   and the boys  did well against Iraq on Friday with a 5-0 win,  but  I have no doubt that we would overcome the Iranians if we can correct some specific lapses we have noticed,” he said.
Meanwhile, chief coach  Manu Garba says his team still have some problems, despite their 5-0 hammering of Iraq on Friday.
“Iraq gave their best and I want to commend them. But despite our victory, we have noticed some lapses too, which would be corrected as we move on,” Manu said.
“We would get better as the tournament progresses. We did not have any quality friendly matches before the beginning  of the tournament and I believe we can always get better.”

3 policemen shot dead in Egypt

Cairo - Gunmen on Monday killed three policemen in Egypt, where attacks against security forces have been on the rise in the face of a bloody crackdown against Islamists, security officials said.
The assailants opened fire on the policemen who were posted near the University of Mansura in Egypt's Nile Delta region, before fleeing, one source said.
Since the army's ouster of the country's first freely elected president, Islamist Mohammed Morsi, near-daily attacks targeting security forces have left dozens dead, particularly in the lawless Sinai peninsula.
The interim government installed by the army accuses pro-Morsi Islamist groups of being behind the attacks.
Jihadist movements have claimed many of the attacks, slamming what they call a brutal military coup and have demanded Morsi's return to power.
Since 14 August, when policemen and soldiers killed hundreds of pro-Morsi demonstrators in Cairo as they dispersed two huge protest camps, over 1 000 have died in the crackdown.
More than 2 000 members and supporters of Morsi's Muslim Brotherhood have also been arrested since August, including Morsi and its top leadership, who will face trial for inciting the killing of protesters.

Mark’s comment ridicules Onosode – ASUU

Deacon Gamaliel Onosode
The Academic Staff Union of Nigerian Universities, University of Ibadan chapter, has condemned the statement of Senate President David Mark on the competence of those who negotiated the 2009 agreement with ASUU on behalf of the Federal Government.
The union said the Senate President’s remarks ridiculed the leader of the Federal Government’s team, Deacon Gamaliel Onosode.
It therefore demanded an apology for Onosode.
Mark had last Wednesday derided the government’s negotiators, saying ASUU took advantage of their ignorance.
“They (ASUU) found that those who were sent there (government negotiating team led by Onosode) simply didn’t know their right from their left,” the Senate President had said when the strike by ASUU came up for debate on the floor of the senate.
At the end of a congress held at UI on Friday, the chapter chairman of ASUU, Dr. Olusegun Ajiboye, asked Mark to tender an apology to Onosode, saying the elder statesman deserved respect from Nigerians.
He said, “Onosode is a man of proven integrity, and impeccable character. He deserves better than the colour painted of him by the Senate President. The Congress respects the personality of Onosode, an alumnus of the University College Ibadan, who has served as the Chairman of governing councils of UI and University of Lagos and a successful businessman who has served the country in various intervention capacities.
“The congress condemns these disparaging comments and demands that the Senate President apologises to this elder statesman. Can we actually trust these characters to midwife any intervention with a bias and myopic construction myth makes right? Where else in the world are senators earning bogus allowances as we have in the National Assembly? We challenge the Revenue Allocation, Mobilisation and Fiscal Commission to publish salaries and allowance of the senate president for Nigerians to see how patriotic he is to the true state of the economy.”
Ajiboye also asked the upper legislative house to be alive and sensitive to national issues, saying President Goodluck Jonathan, who was then the Vice President when the agreement with ASUU was signed, instructed the government team to sign the agreement.
He also said that Mark’s statement smirked of disbelief about his knowledge of national issues as he was already the head of the senate when the agreement was signed.
Meanwhile, the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project has sent a petition against the Federal Government to the United Nations Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights over the ongoing strike by university lecturers.
The petition was sent to the committee through the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Ms Navi Pillay, on October 25, 2013 and signed by its Executive Director, Mr. Adetokunbo Mumuni.
SERAP in the petition described the inability of the government to honour its agreement with ASUU as a fundamental breach.
It said that though the government in 2009 agreed with ASUU to improve the governance structures and funding for the operation of universities across the country but that conditions of service for members of the country’s universities remained poor.
The group asked the UN Committee to “demand that the Nigerian government should urgently and fully implement its agreement with ASUU and ensure sufficient funding of universities across the country.”
It added, “The Committee should put pressure on the government to promote, protect and fulfil the right to education for the sake of millions of Nigerian children that continue to be denied this fundamental human right.
“As the UN Committee has stated, states must take deliberate, concrete and targeted steps as clearly as possible towards meeting the obligations recognised in the covenant. But the persistent refusal by the government to sufficiently fund the country’s universities, and honour its own agreement to ASUU is a deliberate retrogressive measure, and shows lack of good faith.”

APC to Jonathan: You are shielding Oduah

President Goodluck Jonathan
The All Progressives Congress has said that the Goodluck Jonathan administration may end up as the most corrupt in Nigeria’s history.
The party, in its first official reaction to the the  N255m bulletproof car scandal involving the Minister of Aviation, Ms. Stella Oduah, said it was appalled at the manner Jonathan was handling  the  matter.
“We now understand why corruption has grown wings under the Jonathan Presidency, and why the administration may well go down as the most corrupt in the country’s history,” it said in a statement by its Interim National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, on Sunday.
The statement was made available to journalists just as the  Nigerian  Civil Aviation Authority  said it had no  documents relating to the purchase of   the controversial   cars.
The APC    said it reached  its conclusion on the Jonathan Presidency   after juxtaposing the evidence that  had so far  come out of the car scandal with  the actions so far taken by the President.
It pointed out that the handling of the scandal  was a test case  for the  Jonathan  government’s  anti-corruption war.
The statement   warned that  Jonathan might be considered   an accessory to  the scandal  if he continued  to shield Oduah from facing the consequences of  her alleged indiscretion.
The statement reads in part,“It has now emerged that the money spent on  the  cars was not appropriated, which is a violation of the Nigerian constitution; that due process was not followed in buying the cars, as the Bureau of Public Procurement has testified, and that the minister, who was said to have approved the purchase , violated the law by approving an expenditure over the N100m limit.
“These revelations make the Oduahgate a straightforward case that should have been summarily dealt with by the President. Instead, he has engaged himself in rigmarole by setting up a diversionary administrative panel in what is now looking like an orchestrated ploy to buy time, hoping this issue will die down and the minister will escape being sanctioned.
“Unfortunately for Mr. President, Oduahgate is not just another scandal, but a referendum on his administration’s fight against corruption, and on the legacy he intends to leave in this critical area.”
APC also accused Jonathan of “thumbing his nose at Nigerians,” who have expressed outrage at the action of the minister, by approving her trip to travel to Israel as part of his entourage.
According to the party, no one believes the ‘dummy’ being sold to the public, that Oduah  was denied access to the President in Israel.
It added that “the egregious act of putting the minister on his(Jonathan) entourage, at a time she is at the centre of a terrible scandal, calls to question the President’s sense of propriety and his commitment to the war against corruption.”
The opposition party further observed that the body language of the President over the matter was sending a signal to ministers that it was alright to be corrupt.
It also  wondered whether the President was aware of the joke going the rounds that   five “super ministers  that  he can neither sanction nor remove, irrespective of their actions,”   were  ferreting out fundsfor his 2015 war chest.
But   the  Peoples Democratic Party, said the opposition, especially the  APC, was in not in a  position to accuse the Jonathan administration of corruption.
It described the APC as a party peopled by  those  whose main business is corruption
“The APC lacks the moral right to accuse our dear President and our great party of corruption. Most of the opposition  leaders ought to be behind bars.
“We are happy  the   President   has set up a committee and has ordered for an investigation into the  issue. This shows  that he  has respect for the law, “the PDP  through its  Deputy National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Abubakr  Jalo, told one of our correspondents.
It therefore advised the APC  “ to remove the log in its  eyes before removing the speck from the eyes of others.”

12 shocking facts about Nigeria

Some years ago, a brilliant lecturer of mine (now late) said something about Nigeria that I waved aside as an exaggerated expression of patriotism. He told my class then that he had travelled to many places in the world and had finally come to the conclusion that Nigeria is the most blessed nation on the planet. I knew Nigeria was blessed but I couldn’t understand how he could boldly claim that top position for Nigeria: yes we have oil, gas, landmass–in fact, abundant natural and human resources, but was that enough?

FIFA U-17 World Cup: My Eaglets not technically deficient, Garba replies critics

Eaglets vs Ivory Coast during the group matches

Golden Eaglets coach, Manu Garba has argued that it was unfair for his players to receive thumbs down after their 3-3 display against Sweden on Tuesday, at the on-going FIFA Under-17 World Cup here in the United Arab Emirate.
The Eaglets came from behind to share the points with the Swedes, after an emphatic 6-1 thrashing of Mexico in their group F opening game. The team on Tuesday looked out-maneuvered by the Sweden and Nigerian fans were to concluded that the team was deficient especially in the defence.
But coach Garba said that  that it was wrong for people to say that, pointing out that: “This is an Under-17 team and none of them have experience. You do not expect them not to make some mistakes at times.
“I do not think we have struggled in this tournament or at the CAN Junior event. We

FG signed N1.2trn to fund varsities in 4 years, not N500bn

asuu-protests-new
Prof Ukachukwu Aloysius Awuzie is the immediate past President of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and the current Ag Vice Chancellor, Imo State University. In this interview with Vanguard Learning, he bares his mind on the major issues bedeviling the education sector 53 years after independence; the on-going ASUU strike, pertinent issues government and other stakeholders must resolve to regain the lost glory of the nation’s education sector, among others. Excerpt:
The nation’s public universities look like grave yard due to the ongoing ASUU strike and failure of Federal government to accede to ASUU’s demands (cuts in)
No, not to accede to ASUU’s demands, but to honour an agreement which it willingly entered into and signed with the union. There are no more demands. ASUU has already made its demands long before now when the union went into agreement with government. So the issue is that government has refused to implement what it signed with the union.
But government recently earmarked N130bn to settle the NEEDS Assessment implementation programmes for varsities and staff’s Earned Allowance. Are these not enough for ASUU to

ASUU Strike: UNILORIN students call for truce

Even though they unaffected by the protracted strike embarked by public university lecturers, students of the University of Ilorin have appealed to both the Federal Government and the striking lecturers to consider the plights of students, and reach a truce that will end the three months strike.
The students, who have just resumed for the new academic session lamented that they are not happy seeing their colleagues from other schools staying at home while they are in school receiving lectures.
Speaking with Quadlife, the students bemoaned the uncaring attitude of government towards education in the country, and urged them to return to negotiation table with the striking lecturers to discuss ways of ending the strike as soon as possible.
“I am not happy with the way the Federal Government is handling this matter; they seem careless about the plights of Nigerian students because their own children are either in abroad or private universities studying without any distraction. I passionately appeal to both FG and ASUU to resume negotiations and find ways to end this embarrassing strike, said Sirajdeen Alabede, a 400l Geography and Environmental Management student.
Alarape Wasiu, a 400 Level Agricultural Science student stressed that no nation can develop with a retrogressive and decayed education system, saying that education remains the only viable option to a secure and egalitarian society. His words: “I am not happy seeing my friends in other schools staying hopelessly at home owing to the irresponsibility of our government. A nation that fails to educate its people will remain unsafe and unsecure. The federal government should please meet the demands of ASUU for the betterment of our education sector and for the good of the country,” he urged.

I’ve disappointed critics of my musical career – Ego

Singer Ego Ihenacho Ogbaro believes music has made her a deeper person. The petite lady was the only female vocalist with Lagbaja’s band until she left to pursue a solo career in 2007. She has backed-up for the masked musician on several tracks including ‘Konko Below’ and ‘Nothing For You’ but her soulful wailing in ‘Never far Away’, a track in Lagbaja’s ‘Africano’ album, remains indelible in the minds of fans. Ego spoke with Saturday Vanguard  recently about her life after split from Lagbaja

Who was Ego as a child?
*Ego
*Ego
I was a very stubborn child and I am still very stubborn(chuckles) because I always wanted my way. It was my way or no way. Although I was a lively child, I didn’t let things get to me or weigh me down.  I easily get angry and  I think I am just myself.
How has it been since you left Lagbaja ?
I always knew that I wanted to sing and it was just a matter of time before the dream manifested.
What I wanted to do was totally different from what I was doing with Lagbaja. It was the same music thing but in a different way. Yes, people would have their doubts and not even know what direction I was going.
It was a step that I had to take, something I had to prove and had to show the world that I knew what I wanted and I was moving in the right direction. So, it’s natural for people to feel that way and have doubts. So far, it’s been good.
How long did you work with  him ?
I  worked with him as a solo artiste for 12years and I learnt a lot from him, like hard work and

Rihanna asked to tone down raunchy image to become cartoon character

Los Angeles - Rihanna is being asked to tone down her image so she can be made into a cartoon character.

The Stay singer is being sought by DreamWorks Animation studios, who want to make a character out of her, but first they want her to agree to promote a more wholesome lifestyle.

A source says the company's CEO, Jeffrey Katzenberg, wants to "globalise and sanitise her image for the widest possible audience".

The source added to RadarOnline.com: "Jeffrey has been tracking Robyn [Rihanna's birth name] for a couple of years. He is a huge fan and believes the sky's the limit if she can clean up her

Free online course for African entrepreneurs: meet Rebecca Harrison of AMI

Rebecca Harrison is director at African Management Initiative (AMI), an organisation that aims to provide business skills to one million African managers before 2025. They hope to achieve this goal by offering a range of Massive Online Open Courses (MOOC) and other online resources, due to launch next January. She answers our questions.
How did you end up launching an online course about business for Africans?
We started by conducting research about the management gap in Africa. We discussed making business education more practical and more relevant, and developing a more scalable approach.
We launched the AMI Virtual Campus, a place where managers can gather and find resources from leading business schools from the continent.
Next January, we are relaunching and rebranding. We will offer a MOOC with a blend of online and offline elements. We have an ambitious goal: to reach one million managers within the next decade. We want to reach a critical mass and

Getting a good idea for your future business

Getting a good idea for your future business is arguably the single most important step in its success. Depending on implementation, a good idea can beget both successful or unsuccessful businesses, but a bad egg never makes a good chicken. All the flaws in your idea will get amplified as times passes by and entropy takes its toll. You want the core idea of your business to be resilient to bad luck.
Thus, it is urgent not to hurry. Take your time and think hard and long about your business project!
Define the constraints (lack of knowledge, of time, of money, of resources) that will impose boundaries on your vision. Define what your business idea is NOT about.
Everybody has ideas. There is no lack of them in the world. Most of them are blurry. What lacks is the kind of ideas that has been hardened, refined and expanded with great care until they show a
